Distilled Peru Balsam (Myroxylon pereirae), literally “fragrant wood” in Greek, is a resinous material that comes from a tree native to Central and South America, but primarily from the “Balsam Coast” of El Salvador. It has a sweet, rich vanilla-like scent with a hint of cinnamon, and is a popular fragrance in perfumes. Historically, Peru Balsam was an important ingredient in the anointing oils of the Christian faith. Combined with olive oil, it is a component of the holy chrism used by Catholic bishops. We use distilled Peru Balsam essential oil; there is no pure Peru Balsam in this soap. Peru Balsam can be useful for chafed and chapped skin.

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) comes from the leaves of a plant in the mint family that is native to tropical regions of Asia. It has a deep, earthy scent and has been used in perfumes for centuries. You may remember this aroma from the 1960s and 1970s when it was used extensively by hippies as a popular incense scent! Patchouli in handmade goat milk soap is said to be beneficial for acne, as an antibacterial, and as an insect repellent.

Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) essential oil comes from the roots of a grass that is native to India. It has a sweet, woody, smoky, earthy aroma and is contained in 90% of all western perfumes. Vetiver is a calming scent and is said to be beneficial for acne and oily skin.

Amyris (Amyris balsamifera) is an oleoresin that comes from the trunk of the Balsam Torchwood tree which is native to Asia, Central America, Haiti & other Caribbean islands. It’s often referred to as West Indian Sandalwood, and has a very mild woody aroma with a hint of vanilla. Amyris is said to have strong anti-inflammatory properties and may slow the aging process of skin.

Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) essential oil comes from the resin extracted from the trunk of the Myrrh tree which is native to the Middle East and originated in Ethiopia. Myrrh resin was one of the gifts brought by the Magi to the baby Jesus. It has anti-infectious, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties and has a warm, sweet, balsamic, slightly spicy aroma.

Cedarwood (Juniperus Virginiana L.) has an earthy, woodsy and slightly sweet scent. It’s believed to calm and soothe nerves and is a good astringent for acne prone skin. Cedarwood is a tree native to North America and has a rich history of traditional uses by Native Americans.

Dalmatian Sage (Salvia officinalis), called “garden” or “true” Sage, is one of about 750 varieties of sage around the world but is known as the superior Sage variety. It’s native to Dalmatia and the coastal Adriatic. With its powerful spicy, sharp, and very herbaceous scent, it can be overpowering unless used in very small amounts. It’s botanical name is derived from the Latin salvere, which means to save or to heal, and its antiseptic properties make it useful for treating sores and skin eruptions, excessive sweating, and for stopping bleeding in cuts. This handmade goat milk soap is also a good deodorant and helps treat dandruff when used in the hair.

Olibanum (Boswellia carterii) is more commonly known as Frankincense, and comes from the oleoresin underneath the bark of a tree native to the Arabian Peninsula. It was commonly used in ancient Egypt and was another one of the gifts brought by the Magi to the baby Jesus. Olibanum has a deep, warm, woody, spicy aroma and is known for calming the mind and spirit.

Clove Oil (Syzgium aromaticum) smells like the spice and generally comes from the flower buds or leaves of the clove plant. It’s known to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, antiseptic, analgesic, warming, and anti-viral qualities, and is said to prevent acne and soothe insect bites, eczema and psoriasis. A little clove oil goes a LONG way, so our soap contains a very tiny amount.
