Fig (Ficus carica) – Figs date back to the story of Adam and Eve, making their entrance in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve covered themselves with fig leaves. Figs are also believed to have been the favorite fruit of Cleopatra, and they played a role in her suicide; having decided to take her life in 30 B.C.E. after Mark Antony’s death, Cleopatra asked that an asp be delivered to her, concealed in a basket of figs. The fig is native to Turkey, which remains the largest producer of the fruit followed by California.

Fig Fruit Powder contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, and K. It is high in natural alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) properties which are thought to help refresh and brighten the skin. Ficin (also known as ficain), the enzyme in figs, is 20 times more powerful than papain (papaya enzyme). It does a great job of exfoliating the skin without irritation. Figs are rich in oils in both the skin and the seeds and they have some mild antioxidant properties, which may help reverse skin damage.

More about our Fig & Cranberry handcrafted soap:

Ingredients: Dalmatian Olive Oil, Water, Organic Coconut Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Organic Palm Oil, Sunflower Oil (Croatia), Unrefined Shea Butter, Phthalate-Free Fragrance**, Fig Fruit Powder, Kaolin Clay, Iron Oxide, Ultramarine Pigment.

**Fragrance notes: We use fig fruit powder and a synthetic fig-cranberry fragrance oil in this handcrafted soap for two reasons. Fig extracts don’t hold a scent very well, especially in cold process soaps, and we want some of fig’s exotic aroma in the bar. Fig Leaf Essential Oil can be dangerous, causing skin irritations; and Fig Leaf Absolute has been banned by the IFRA and the EU for use in cosmetics and beauty products because it is a phototoxic sensitizer. This means it can produce anything from rashes to severe blistering when the skin is exposed to the sun. Fig powder causes none of these problems, contains no harmful preservatives or additives, and allows us to add some of the skin conditioning properties of the fruit to the soap, but we still need a little of the exotic aroma! Any synthetic fragrance oil we use is phthalate-free.
