Lavender – Lavanda

lavender_oil_lavandulaLavender (Lavandula hybrida, Lavandula officianalis, Lavandula intermedia) has a fresh, sweet, herbaceous, floral aroma. Greeks and Romans perfumed their bathwater with lavender, burned lavender incense to appease their wrathful gods, and believed the scent of lavender to be soothing to untamed lions and tigers. The name “lavender” is derived from the Latin lavare, meaning “to wash”. Lavender essential oil has antiseptic properties and is soothing and nurturing for the skin, and Croatian lavender is slightly more antiseptic than other lavenders. It helps to tone and revitalize the skin and can be helpful for a range of skin problems including acne, oily skin, dandruff, burns, wounds, insect bites and stings. It is also an effective insect repellent.

Croatia is one of the largest producing countries of lavender because of its mineral-rich soil and temperate climate. Their lavender is a hybrid called Lavandin, which grows wild in the Mediterranean. As true French lavender has become more expensive due to heavy demand and short supply, the popularity of Dalmatian lavender has increased. Our oil comes from the island of Hvar, which most agree is the finest lavender oil produced in Croatia, from the island of Vis, where it has been cultivated since 1910, and from the mountains of Gorski Kotar.
